Demolitions spark debate over preservation in Nearby Town...
Full Description:
Proponents and opponents of a controversial six-story condominium development slated for the 1500-1600 block of King Street in Alexandria feel that at least one good thing came from an Alexandria Circuit Court judge's recent ruling denying a petition to halt the demolition of two historic buildings located on the site.
"We've focused better on the preservation of historic buildings," said Alexandria Vice Mayor Redella Pepper. "The city council is thinking of expanding the old and historic district boundaries so that more of the city will be protected."
Outside of that, Pepper said, there wasn't anything more to say about the demolition of the two buildings the Upper King Street Preservation Group, led by resident Boyd Walker, has fought hard to protect.
"The court has spoken. What they say goes," she said. "The developer had certain rights and we had certain limitations."
